Fig. 4. In rheumatoid arthritis hand, synovitis at the metacarpophalangeal joint destructs stabilizing ligaments, which results in extensor tendon displacement ulnarly. Moreover, the proximal phalanx subluxates in a volar direction and contracture of intrinsic muscles of the hand results in permanent flexion deformities.
